Catalogue of Programs
My maiden voyage of electric cello concerts started in 2021 with a program titled “Bach to Rock.” It hit a nerve from audience members across concert venues, libraries, and assisted living facilities alike—resulting in more than seventy bookings for that first year. Some of my favorite additions include the Baroque cello suites of J.S. Bach, Latin tangos such as Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango,” and opera selections like Donizetti’s “Una Furtiva Lagrima” and Verdi’s “La Donna Mobile”. I enjoy the lyricism of opera especially when contrasted by the counterpoint of jazz by masters like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Brubeck. And then, there are times where I stray towards the rebellion of the mid-to-late 60’s British Invasion with groups like Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Procol Harum, The Kinks, and The Zombies—to name just a few.
With the cello being what it is, “Bach-2-Rock” says it succinctly in that I try to harvest the best and work diligently to not only recreate but rather reimagine a unique retelling of what we might already know. With each performance, I strive to communicate not simply with music but also through stories that reveal interesting facts about each selection. The product, much like my lectures, is a journey that links history and harmony. Some of the favorite connections I share between popular tunes and classical selections include Procol Harum’s inspiration of “Whiter Shade of Pale” from J.S. Bach’s “Air on the G String” as well as Paul McCartney’s inspiration of “Blackbird” from J.S. Bach’s suite for lute in E minor. I perform each program augmented by a looping station, guitar effect pedals, a wireless headset microphone, and both mixing boards and amplifiers that can be tailored to intimate settings as well as outdoor venues. With these tools, I am able to orchestrate my own suite of voices to accompany my cello and bring my music to another level–a higher level of experience for any audience. With approximately twelve programs both ready and in development, I am able to return to venues multiple times without repeating selections, though I often receive requests for encore performances of various titles.
